My Japanese connect told me to be on the look out for this one. This phone has been in Japan for about three years now and is finally coming to the states. The Brownstone Project is doing the iPhone thing but we always accept and embrace competition.
The T-Mobile G1, the first mobile device powered by Google's open-source Android software, has a large touch screen similar to the iPhone, but it also packs a 3.0-megapixel camera with photo-sharing capability, a trackball, a slide-out keyboard and easy access to Google's email and mapping programs.
Google is giving away Android for free, and opening the operating system to third-party developers who can create their own programs. The software has been seen as Google's way of getting a foothold on the mobile Internet, which industry watchers see as a big growth area, and in particular as a way to make advertising on cell phone screens a viable business.
Amazon.com said its digital music store will be loaded on the G1 allowing users to search, download, buy and play more than six million songs, pitting the device directly against the iPhone.
